Current in lightning

(On request - Kylie)

Q- The potential difference between a storm cloud and the ground is 100 million volts. A charge of 2 coulomb flashes in a lightning bolt from cloud to earth. How much current is in the lightning flash, if it lasted for 0.1 second?

Solution:

The current is the rate of flow of electric charge and thus given by

        I = ΔQ/Δt

The charge flowing is          ΔQ = 2 C

In time interval                   Δt = 0.1 s

Thus the average current in the lightning will be ΔQ/Δt = 2/0.1 = 20 A

(Here the potential difference given is additional quantity given)
